F1 News: Toto Wolff – Mercedes will win a race this year

Toto Wolff is confident about Mercedes’ chances of race victory.

After 15 rounds of the season, Mercedes has yet to secure a race victory, a feat they have routinely achieved in F1 for over a decade.

The Silver Arrows have been in contention for victory on a few occasions this year, with the Hungarian GP perhaps representing their best opportunity in 2022.

Regardless, Mercedes will be encouraged by their consistent performance in race trim, having secured podium finishes in seven of the last eight races and addressed some of their early season gremlins.

There is still work to be done for the remainder of the year, though some would suggest Mercedes should be diverting their resources to addressing some of their underlying issues for next year’s car.

Toto Wolff remains focused on this year, however, confident that the German squad will win a race this season:

“Zandvoort was a good track for us, and both drivers performed to the maximum today with a strong car”, said Wolff in the Mercedes Dutch GP review.

“We had some tough decisions to take with the safety car towards the end. With Lewis ahead, you can do two things: you can either pit him, lose track position against Verstappen and leave George out – screwed.

“You can pit both, but you are setting for P2 and P3, and we agreed as a team this morning to fight for the win, so it was worth the risk. I feel for Lewis. It’s highly emotional, you are that close, bracing for the win, and then you are being eaten up…

“Lewis and I were just speaking, and there are definitely more positives to take from this weekend, second and fourth. It’s annoying, but we had a good car here, and that’s more important.

“You have got to take risks where we are. I’m confident we’ll get the win this season, and we are going to try the maximum. We are a bit closer today, and it is good fun in any case.”
