F1 News: Toto Wolff Reflects on Mattia Binotto’s Resignation and Ferrari’s Performance

In an interview with formula1.com, Toto Wolff spoke about his relationship with former Ferrari Team Principal, Mattia Binotto, and offered his perspective on the changes at the Italian squad.

For nearly a decade, Ferrari has been trying to match the performance and efficiency of Mercedes, who have now established themselves as a dominant force in Formula 1. The significant changes in the Maranello team highlight the ongoing instability within the team as they strive to reclaim their former championship glory.

Despite this, Binotto deserves credit for the impressive performance of the F1-75, which looked particularly strong in the early stages of the season. While reliability issues started to arise as the season progressed, Ferrari still found themselves in a significantly more competitive position than in previous years.

Wolff discussed Binotto’s resignation from Ferrari, stating that the team’s wealth of resources means that there should be few acceptable excuses for failing to win championships in Formula 1. He also pointed out that Binotto’s deflection of Ferrari’s strategic and operational shortcomings throughout 2022 was problematic, as fans grew tired of the persistent issues that cost the Scuderia valuable points.

“I think Mattia and I had our moments. It’s no secret over these many years. But in a way, we consolidated that in 2022.

“We were in a much, much better place. But it was always clear that he was under tremendous pressure.

“Being a Team Principal at Ferrari, you’d better have a good contract for your exit. Now, probably the unavoidable happened, but he held onto it longer than I thought.”

On the other hand, Mercedes – for the first time in several seasons – still lacked the pace to outperform their Italian counterparts in 2022. With Fred Vasseur taking the reins at Ferrari for the upcoming season, Toto Wolff will be eager to restore the Silver Arrows as championship contenders.
