F1 World Heartbroken by Photo of Mick and Michael Schumacher 9 Years After Skiing Accident
Today marks nine years since Michael Schumacher’s skiing accident, which left him with severe brain injuries after falling and hitting his head on a rock while skiing off-piste in Switzerland. The accident occurred in December 2013, and Michael was placed in a medically induced coma until June 2014. His son, current reserve driver for Mercedes Mick Schumacher, was with him at the time of the accident.
To honour the anniversary, Mick changed his social media profile picture to one featuring him and his father when he was younger. The change has been met with a strong response from fans, who have expressed their love and support for the Schumacher family, with the hashtag #KeepFightingMichael currently trending on Twitter.
Many fans commented that they were heartbroken that Michael was not in the most recent photo shared by Mick, which featured him alongside his mother and sister and their dogs and wished the family a Merry Christmas.
“Merry Christmas for you and your family, in especial for Michael keep fighting” [sic] one fan commented. Another added:
“I absolutely respect their privacy. But sometimes I just wanna know, If Michael can talk, if he can eat, if he can walk, can he watch his son’s races? Most of us grew up watching his dominant performance years after years. Its just so sad that, we will not be able see him again..” [sic].
The Schumacher family has always been private about Michael’s condition, but his wife, Corinna, gave an update earlier this year when she accepted the State Prize of North-Rhine-Westphalia award on his behalf. She spoke about the impact of the accident on the family and said:
“I miss Michael every day. But it’s not just me who misses him. It’s the children, the family, his father, everyone around him. I mean, everybody misses Michael, but Michael is here.
“Different, but he’s here and that gives us strength, I find. We try to carry on a family as Michael liked it and still does. And we are getting on with our lives. ‘Private is private’, as he always said.
“It is very important to me that he can continue to enjoy his private life as much as possible. Michael always protected us, and now we are protecting Michael.”
