Lewis Hamilton Awarded Honorary Brazilian Citizenship Ahead Of Sao Paulo GP

Sky Sports have shared a video to their Twitter followers of Lewis Hamilton being awarded his Brazilian citizenship ahead of the Brazilian Grand Prix this weekend.

The news was announced in June that the seven-time world champion had been given the honorary citizenship and he has now been able to receive the award.

Jhonatan de Jesus, Republican party congressman, explained in a report that Hamilton has a “deep and strongly emotional” connection with Brazil. Jesus said:

“His gestures add to his indisputable sporting merit. His public positions in support of relevant issues such as the environment, animal rights, Black people, women and human rights must also be remembered and highlighted,”

Alongside this, Hamilton’s hero growing up was Brazilian F1 legend Ayrton Senna. When Hamilton matched Senna’s number of race wins, his family gifted the Mercedes driver with one of Senna’s helmets.

Now, in the lead up to the race this weekend, Hamilton has been able to receive his honorary award.

When Hamilton received the news back in June that he was being given the honour, he took to his Instagram to break the news. He wrote:

“Speechless. Today I was granted honorary citizenship to one of my favourite places in the world. I don’t really have the words right now. Thank you Brasil, I love you, I can’t wait to see you again.”

The Brazilian Grand Prix is the penultimate race of the 2022 season and the last grand prix with a sprint race. Although Hamilton is going into this weekend in a very different position to last year, the local fans will be rooting for him.

Max Verstappen, who is not a fan of the sprint races, has won both from this season so far so Red Bull fans will be waiting to see if he can make it three out of three. Verstappen took the win for the driver’s championship after the Japanese Grand Prix, but the battle between second and third continues between Sergio Perez and Charles Leclerc.
